Gantry crane mechanisms

The main mechanisms of gantry cranes are a running gear, a lifting trolley, a winch and a cabin. They provide movement of crane equipment, lifting of cargo, and also include controls and safety equipment.

Chassis

The running gear of gantry cranes are one- or two-wheeled carts mounted at the base of the support struts. At least 50% of the running wheels are equipped with an electric drive, and the drive must be separate. Horizontal cylindrical and, in some cases, bevel gears are used to transmit torque from the motor to the wheels.

Lifting trolley

The device of the cargo cart of the gantry crane depends on a design of guides and type of the drive:

• Monorail hoists are moved only by the lower shelf of the girder. This is an outdated model of the mechanism, it is unstable and wears out quickly.
• Two-wheeled gantry cranes can move both the upper and lower part of the bridge truss.
• Cable carts are included in the device of gantry cranes with easy and average mode of work where the load-lifting mechanism is stationary located on a beam.
• Self-propelled carts are equipped with a lifting mechanism, a separate drive and move on rails.
Winch

Cargo winches have a threaded drum or rope pulley. Threaded models are more reliable, but have a large mass and dimensions. To reduce the height of the trolley, the hinge connecting it to the winch is fixed on the transverse beam, sometimes special reducers are used to optimize the layout. If it is necessary to properly orient the load in space, the trucks are equipped with a winch rotation mechanism.

Goat crane cab

There are two types of gantry cranes - mobile and stationary. Each of them provides the crane operator with unobstructed monitoring of the load-grabbing body, the transported cargo, as well as the crane tracks and bogies. In gantry cranes with a span length of up to 25 meters, a fixed cab is installed. It is located near one of the supports with a displacement of up to 3 meters. Movable cabs provide the best view and can be mounted on girders of any length. They move together with the truck and are located at a distance of 1.5-2.5 meters from the freight ropes.

Additional equipment of the gantry crane

Additional options allow you to expand the capabilities of the gantry crane and make working with lifting equipment safer. They can be laid in the scheme of the bridge crane or installed after its commissioning.

• The load limiter is installed in front of the load handler and serves to automatically stop the lift when the load exceeds the maximum allowable. This option avoids accidents and serious damage to crane equipment.
• The remote control allows you to accurately position the load in space, while the functions of the crane operator performs. Installation of a radio control system is possible both during the manufacture of a gantry crane and during its operation.
• The weight of the gantry crane allows you to accurately measure the weight of the load during lifting and helps to avoid overloading the crane equipment. Structurally, they consist of an electronic board and a hook, and are mounted directly on the load-grabbing mechanism.
• The frequency converter is connected to the electric motors of the trolley and increases the accuracy of load positioning and safety of lifting and transport operations. Using this equipment instead of the relay-contactor circuit avoids jerks, as well as overloading the motors when starting and stopping the crane.
The principle of operation of a gantry crane

The principle of operation of the gantry crane is based on a set of cyclic operations associated with the lifting of artificial or container material, periodic movement of the unit from the place of slinging material to the place of unloading and back. Transportation of raw materials, structures and movement of equipment is due to a special mechanism - a truck. It ensures the movement of the machine over the bridge span. The main operations performed by the gantry crane are grabbing, lifting, moving, lowering, releasing the load or unfastening, setting the hook in the upper position and moving the empty truck to zero position at full completion.
